Chief Executive Officer Bill Haywood is Chief Executive Officer of LS9. He brings over 30 years of fuel manufacturing, refining, and marketing experience to the company. Most recently, he was the SVP of Manufacturing for Tesoro Petroleum, where he was responsible for the company's seven refineries and over $20 billion in revenue. Under his leadership, Tesoro became a leading independent refiner by integrating refinery acquisitions, driving operational excellence, and building over $1 billion in capital projects. During this period, shareholder value increased by more than 86% and earnings per share increased almost fivefold - resulting in recognition by the Wall Street Journal as a top oil and gas performance leader and a number one ranking by Forbes Magazine in the oil and gas category for the 400 Best Big Companies of 2008. Mr. Haywood has a strong track record of environmental stewardship and bringing clean fuels to market in partnership with regulatory agencies such as the California Air Resources Board (CARB), Bay Area Air Quality Management District and South Coast Air Quality Management District. His leadership approach centers on alignment around common goals and helping team members exceed their own expectations. He is a pragmatist who is known for balancing vision with risk, finance with safety, and people with processes. Previously, Mr. Haywood served as Regional Vice President of Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corporation, where he was responsible for the company's California refineries. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Northern California Special Olympics, Texas Special Olympics and the Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach, California. Mr. Haywood received a B.S. degree in Biology from Miami University (Ohio), a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Ohio State University, and an MBA from Pepperdine University. ![]() Stephen del Cardayre
Vice President, Research and Development Stephen del Cardayre has broad responsibility for research and development, external collaborations, and day-to-day operations at LS9. Prior to joining LS9, Dr. del Cardayre spent 9 years at Codexis and Maxygen, where he was directly involved in the development, application, and commercialization of technologies for the engineering of biocatalytic processes for the pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Dr. del Cardayre has published extensively on the application of evolutionary engineering of biological systems, focusing primarily on the engineering of whole cell biocatalysts. By training, Dr. del Cardayre is a biochemist, receiving an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of California - Berkeley, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Post doctoral training in Microbial Biotechnology at the University of British Columbia. ![]() Wei Huang
Vice President, Process Development and Engineering Wei Huang has responsibility for process development, engineering, and scale up at LS9. Ms. Huang brings over 17 years of industrial bioprocess experience, including process scale up, facility and equipment design, process simulation, construction support, facility start-up, operation support, as well as process development and research. Prior to joining LS9, Ms. Huang was Director of Process Engineering at Fluor Corporation, one of the world's largest, publicly owned engineering companies. During her tenure there, Ms. Huang successfully led various engineering projects for the biotechnology industry worldwide. Prior to joining Fluor, she worked at Bechtel, North American Vaccine (now part of Baxter) and New Brunswick Scientific Inc, where she was directly involved in the process development, scale up and product commercialization for both biopharmaceuticals and industrial fermentation products. Active in a variety of professional organizations such as SIM, AIChE and ISPE, Ms. Huang serves as a committee member of ASME BPE. She is a well published author, a frequent speaker at various biotechnology events and a recipient of the ISPE Best Article of the Year award. Senior Director, Corporate Development Gregory Pal is responsible for marketing and business development at LS9. Prior to joining LS9, Mr. Pal spent 6 years at Tellme Networks, where he helped grow company revenue to over $100 million per year (a 50x increase). He combines a passion for building sustainable businesses with a pragmatic approach to problem solving. At Tellme Networks, Mr. Pal held various positions, including Director, Vertical & Corporate Marketing and Director, Financial Planning & Analysis, and was involved in all aspects of the business - from strategic planning, market selection, and product management through pre-sales activity, contract negotiation, and post-sales account management and P&L optimization. Mr. Pal received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a MBA from Harvard Business School. ![]() Bernie Chong
Controller Bernie Chong has overall responsibility for the financial accounting and reporting of the company's operations at LS9. He also heads up the IT function of the company. Mr. Chong started his career in public accounting and has 11 years of controllership experience. Prior to joining LS9, Mr. Chong was the key finance executive that facilitated an LBO for a group of investors in which he restructured the company's debt-equity position, obtained new working capital and saw to the daily financial matters that enabled the company to revitalize its operations. Prior to that, Mr. Chong spent eight years with Venture Corporation, a publicly traded $2.5 billion tier one global electronics manufacturing company, where he developed and grew the company's Northern California operations into a $50M revenue profit center. Mr. Chong began his career at Deloitte and Touche as part of its Audit and Assurance Services division where he managed a portfolio of cross-industry clients in banking and finance, securities, oil and gas and manufacturing. Mr Chong is a registered CPA and holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. ![]() Mary Jansen
Director, Human Resources Mary Jansen brings over 15 years of human resources and labor relations experience, primarily in the biotechnology and medical device industries. Ms. Jansen is responsible for the planning and implementation of strategic initiatives that promote a motivating and rewarding culture. As a member of the LS9 executive leadership team, she serves as a business partner developing talent and providing high quality human resources services that drive superior organizational performance. Ms. Jansen holds a B.S. degree in Human Services from the College of Notre Dame and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the Human Resource Certification Institute. |
